Rho Xi Omega Chapter History
Rho Xi Omega Chapter was chartered on December 3, 1988 by 80 dynamic women of Metropolitan Baltimore. We are the second chapter established in Baltimore to better serve the Baltimore community.
In 1991, a charitable nonprofit organization, Rho Xi Omega Charities, Inc. was established as the Chapter’s public service arm to more effectively manage its Programs Of Service and expand funding opportunities.
Alpha Kappa Alpha responds to the contemporary needs of the Black community with comprehensive non-traditional programs. Our Programs of Service are funneled through the National ESP Program. The ESP vision embraces a five-pronged program designed to excite, galvanize and ignite the passions of more than 180,000 members worldwide. The goal is to transfer this enthusiasm into a collective resolve to parlay members' talents, energy and creativity to realize Alpha Kappa Alpha's enormous potential for empowerment, security and progress.
We have maintained a partnership with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Maryland since 1987. Another long standing initiative is Camp Font-tastic, a summer program focusing on computer and math instruction.
In 1993 at the North Atlantic Regional Conference, we were selected as the Mid-size Chapter of the Year and Vivian Braxton was named Basileus (President) of the Year for Mid-size Chapters. Rho Xi Omega won third place as Mid-size Chapter of the Year in 2002. Rho Xi Omega member, Senator Delores Kelley and the Maryland State Senate congratulated the Chapter for its exemplary service in the Baltimore Community.
In 2005, Rho Xi Omega finalized a $10,000 endowment at Baltimore City Community College, the first fraternal organization to do so.
At the 2005 and 2006 North Atlantic Regional Conferences, our Ivy Reading AKAdemy was cited as the Exemplary Ivy Reading AKAdemy in the North Atlantic Region and was awarded $1000. Additionally, our After School AKAdemy for middle school girls won the Collaborative Community Award. At the recent 2007 North Atlantic Regional Conference in Hartford, Connecticut; Rho Xi Omega was name third place large Chapter of the Year.
In our short history we have awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to deserving young people and earned numerous awards and recognitions.
